Minimizing Artifact Formation in Magnetorheological Finishing of CVD ZnS Flats

چکیده

LLE Review, Volume 101 35 Introduction and Motivation The development of optics for new applications is based on the use of materials that have the appropriate mechanical and optical properties. For infrared (IR) window and dome materials that protect imaging systems against damaging conditions, three main considerations are taken into account: material strength, thermal-shock resistance, and optical characteristics, such as transmission, absorption, scattering, and emissivity. To obtain maximum transmittance, a good IR material should exhibit minimum optical scattering due to a rough surface finish. The synthetic materials that meet the requirements for IR windows could be either single crystals or polycrystalline with cubic crystallographic structure, the latter being usually tougher, which is desired.1 Polycrystalline ZnS is an excellent candidate for these applications.

Acidic magnetorheological finishing of infrared polycrystalline materials.

Chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) ZnS is an example of a polycrystalline material that is difficult to polish smoothly via the magnetorheological finishing (MRF) technique. When MRF-polished, the internal infrastructure of the material tends to manifest on the surface as millimeter-sized "pebbles," and the surface roughness observed is considerably high. The fluid's parameters important to develop...

Magnetorheological finishing of chemical-vapor deposited zinc sulfide via chemically and mechanically modified fluids.

We describe the anisotropy in the material removal rate (MRR) of the polycrystalline, chemical-vapor deposited zinc sulfide (ZnS). We define the polycrystalline anisotropy via microhardness and chemical erosion tests for four crystallographic orientations of ZnS: (100), (110), (111), and (311). Anisotropy in the MRR was studied under magnetorheological finishing (MRF) conditions. Three chemical...

Development of Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF) Process for Freeform Surfaces

One of the newly developed methods for obtaining super finished surfaces for freeform is Magnetorheological finishing (MRF). MRF is an advanced finishing process in which the grinding force is controlled by magnetic field. The material removal in MRF is governed by the magnetorheological fluid which mainly consists of carbonyl iron (CI), abrasives particles, carrier fluids and additives. MRF pr...

Performance Evaluation of Improved Ball End Magnetorheological Finishing Process

A novel nanofinishing process using improved ball end magnetorheological (MR) finishing tool was developed for finishing of flat as well as 3D surfaces of ferromagnetic and non ferromagnetic workpieces. In this process a magnetically controlled ball end of smart MR polishing fluid is generated at the tip surface of the tool which is used as a finishing medium and it is guided to follow the surf...

The Magnetorheological Finishing (MRF) of Potassium Dihydrogen Phosphate (KDP) Crystal with Fe3O4 Nanoparticles

The cubic Fe3O4 nanoparticles with sharp horns that display the size distribution between 100 and 200 nm are utilized to substitute the magnetic sensitive medium (carbonyl iron powders, CIPs) and abrasives (CeO2/diamond) simultaneously which are widely employed in conventional magnetorheological finishing fluid. The removal rate of this novel fluid is extremely low compared with the value of co...
